Body-based therapy

Body-based therapy, always optional

For adults who notice that the body stays braced long after leaving.

Somatic, or body-based, therapy pays attention to breath, posture, tension and the small signals the body gives, alongside talking. Bertha uses simple practices you can try in the room and at home, and she asks before each one. Results vary, and she explains the possible risks and benefits before you begin.

What it looks like

  • Noticing before changing anything

  • Breath and posture practices you can do anywhere

  • No touch, ever, in these sessions

  • A word or a hand signal to pause

Sessions

What a body-based session may include

  • 01

    Arriving

We start by noticing how you are today, in the chair, with your feet on the floor.

  • 02

    Trying one practice

A slow breath, a stretch or a pause, chosen with you. You say yes or no to each.

  • 03

    Settling

We close with something that helps you feel steady for the walk to your car.

What this is not

What this is not

  • Not massage or bodywork

There is no touch. Everything happens with you seated or standing, fully dressed.

  • Not a promise

Results vary. We do not guarantee how you will feel, and nothing is required of you.

  • Not instead of an advocate

A safety plan, shelter and legal help come from advocates. We can help you reach them.

Pace and payment

How long it takes, and how it is paid

Sessions are 50 minutes, usually weekly or every other week. You can pair body-based practices with talk therapy or EMDR, or use them alone. Your counselor sets the pace with you.

You pay for each session yourself, and your fee is given to you in writing before you start. If you pay without insurance you also receive a Good Faith Estimate. The page on how fees work has the details.

Questions

Three questions about body-based work

Do I have to close my eyes?

No. Many people prefer to keep them open and look at something in the room. That is fine.

What if noticing my body is uncomfortable?

Say so and we change what we are doing. Starting with grounding and the room around you is always an option.

Can I do this by video?

Yes, if you are in South Dakota with a private place. We adapt each practice to the screen.

Write when you are ready

Tell us how it is private to reach you. We reply within one business day, and not before you choose.
