Getting steady

Getting steady first

For adults who want solid ground, now, before or instead of deeper work.

These sessions are about the present: grounding practices, a sleep routine that works for your home, and ways to be in touch with Prairie Dawn and with other people that stay private. Some clients stay here for a while; others move on to EMDR or body-based work. Results vary.

What it looks like

  • Grounding practices you choose and keep

  • Planning for private phone, email and mail

  • Talking through the week, not the past

  • A steady place to return to if deeper work gets hard

Sessions

What these sessions include

  • 01

    This week

We start with what the week was like and what you need from the hour.

  • 02

    One practice at a time

Grounding, rest and small routines, tried in the room and adjusted at the next visit.

  • 03

Private ways to be in touch

We decide together how we reach you and what a voicemail or text may say, and we revisit it as things change.

What this is not

What this is not

  • Not a safety plan

A full plan is built with an advocate or the National Domestic Violence Hotline. We can help you reach them.

  • Not a step you must finish

Some clients never move to EMDR. Steady ground is enough of a reason to come.

  • Not a promise

Results vary. We will not guarantee how you will feel, and we go at your speed.

Pace and payment

How long it takes, and how it is paid

Sessions are 50 minutes, usually weekly or every other week. Your counselor sets the pace with you, and there is no set number of sessions.

You pay for each session yourself, and your fee is given to you in writing before you start. If you pay without insurance you also receive a Good Faith Estimate. The page on how fees work has the details.

Questions

Three questions about getting steady

Do I need to start here?

Not always, but most people do. We decide together after a conversation in the first session.

Can we talk about my current situation?

Yes. Many clients are still deciding what to do, and we start where you are. An advocate can help with decisions about safety.

How do you keep contact private?

On the contact form you tell us whether a voicemail is fine, or whether to use text or email only. We follow that, and we ask again from time to time.

Write when you are ready

Tell us how it is private to reach you. We reply within one business day, and not before you choose.
