Fees
How fees work
What sets your fee, what you receive in writing, and what you can claim back.
Insurance we work with
Prairie Dawn is out of network with every plan, so you pay for each session yourself. We do not bill Medicare or Medicaid. If someone else holds your plan, a statement from the insurer can reach them, so ask us before you use insurance. If you would rather see someone who bills your plan, we will gladly give you names.
Out of network with insurance plans
No Medicare or Medicaid billing
If you pay yourself
You pay at the end of each session by card, including HSA and FSA cards. Nothing is due in advance and there is no contract. The fee depends on the session and how long it runs: 60 minutes for the first, 50 after that. We give it to you in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.
Receipts for reimbursement
Each month we can give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) with the dates and kind of session, to send to a plan that may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code the insurer can see, and a statement about it may go to the policyholder. Your plan decides whether it pays anything.
An estimate in advance
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
Checking your benefits
We do not check benefits, because we do not bill your plan. If you want to know whether a plan reimburses, call it before the first session and ask about out-of-network mental health services. Ask your advocate, too, whether a victim compensation program in South Dakota could help with the cost of counseling.

Questions
Questions about fees
Do you take my insurance?
Prairie Dawn is out of network with every plan, so you pay for each session yourself. We do not bill Medicare or Medicaid. If someone else holds your plan, a statement from the insurer can go to them, which is one reason many clients choose to pay directly. We can give you names of counselors who bill plans.
What is a superbill, and how do I use it?
A superbill is a monthly itemized receipt you may send to your plan, and your plan decides whether it pays anything. It lists the dates and kind of session and carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see, and a statement about the claim may go to the policyholder. Ask your plan before you start.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of your care before you start. We give you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
How much does it cost, and how do fees work?
The fee depends on the session and how long it runs, and we give it to you in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one. The page on how fees work has the details.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Yes. We take HSA and FSA cards like any other card, at the end of the session.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment. If getting to a session is not possible for a reason you would rather not explain, tell us that and we will not charge a late fee.
